Why are We Behind?

America has always prided itself in being home of the free and the brave, but how is that that we are now behind in what seems like a race for what I consider a human right. What right, well the right to love and marry who you wish. Like I stated in the previous blog, I was raised in a pretty conservative home with parents who are against the gay rights movement but I on the other hand (a heterosexual) think that it should be an inalienable right to marry whoever you want.

According to this The New York Times   article many Latin American countries around the world are in favor with the gay rights movements, which shocks a lot of people considering the tight religious and traditional values they hold. Political leaders are becoming heroes to their people for making these changes to their constitutions and even overlooking the disapproval of high end religious leaders such as today's pope! I definitely think that these countries have it right considering all that we as Americans have gone though, even in the past two hundred years. The article goes to say that the Mexican ruling was based on a decision on a American interracial marriage case, and noted that "was relevant because the historical disadvantages that homosexuals have suffered create an analogy with the discrimination that interracial couples endured in another era." One word, absolutely!

Slavery, women's rights, all examples of when people do not accept people. Maybe after people start seeing this, they may see that America is maybe losing its place as the "it" county to live in, and perhaps we can move towards keeping, or even regaining that title. Until then this is Political Me.

Political Me

Welcome to Political Me, my name is Juan Morales I am 23 years old and a student currently at Austin Community College enrolled in government 2305. Today's blog will cover... wait for for it, yup you guessed it, political me. What does that mean you ask? Well I have asked myself that same question multiple times and this is what I came up with.

I was raised in a very conservative and religious home where political advice was mainly coming from a pastor, or some religious television show. When it came time to start learning how to vote I realized that while conservative views where what I had known my entire life, that I was actually leaning on some liberal viewpoints. After many disagreements with my parents and endless "Where do you stand" quizzes I learned that I am definitely not an extreme conservative or liberal, but more middle-of-the-road. Since I claimed to be in the middle of both political stances I have lost my interest in politics. One of my goals of taking this government course is to open up discussion and maybe broaden my views so that I can be more proactive on understanding political views. Afterwards I hope to be able to take away a deeper understanding of politics and government so that I may be able to make those choices and vote for something that could change the world.

And that folks is political me.
